Hosur Industrial Area comprises 1,500 large, medium, and small industries, with a workforce of about 2.5 lakh. A wide range of engineering components and products is manufactured in Hosur industries. Hosur isn't a single town but a central industrial hub with several parks totalling thousands of acres, with recent developments adding hundreds of acres, such as SIPCOT expansions and private industrial parks, making it a massive manufacturing corridor spanning vast areas across various established and new zones.
With the advent of industrialisation in Hosur, the need for a common forum for industries was felt to support the activities initiated by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The Hosur Industries Association (HIA) was formed in February 1981. Since then, HIA has grown and expanded into a multifaceted organisation and stands today as the apex body of industries in Hosur and counts within its ranks companies engaged in diverse products ranging from Automobiles to Jewellery, FMCG, Pharma and textiles, Hospitals, Engineering Colleges, Hotels, Service Sectors etc.
HIA has been privileged to be guided by eminent leaders such as Mr. A.M.M. Arunachalam of Carborundum Universal, Mr. D. Jayavardhanavelu of LMW, and Mr. Venu Srinivasan of TVS MOTOR Company. Their visionary leadership transformed a small village into a prosperous urban centre. The manufacturing industry has played a pivotal role in this development, generating a multiplier effect by attracting numerous ancillary and allied service industries.
HIA has played an essential role in the development of infrastructure in Hosur and has been promoting the interests of its members by voicing their concerns on issues affecting trade, commerce, and industry as well as in infrastructural matters plaguing the town.
The concept of planned economic development, initiated jointly by the Central and State Governments in the 1970s, has been the primary catalyst governing the remarkable industrial advancement India has experienced over the past two decades. This model has facilitated the promotion of industries in underdeveloped regions, thereby addressing regional disparities and diminishing significant differences previously observed between urban and rural areas. Presently, economic and social progress is as evident, if not more so, in rural centers as in urban centers.
Hosur, situated in Krishnagiri District of Tamil Nadu, was among the numerous taluks selected by the State Government for industrial development. The objective of promoting this underdeveloped area was to establish a model industrial complex that caters to the diverse requirements of small, medium, and large enterprises. Presently, Hosur boasts one of the most extensive industrial complexes in India. Once a remote village on the border of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Hosur has now evolved into a prominent economic hub in the country, characterised by unparalleled industrial growth. The skills and workmanship of employees are comparable to those in Western nations such as Germany, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
The nature of industrial development in Hosur is notable for its quality and modernity. Due to its salubrious climate, excellent infrastructure, and strategic location on the NH7 highway, as well as its proximity to Chennai Port and Bangalore Airport, Hosur has successfully attracted some of the most distinguished industrial entities in the country, including the Tatas, the Birlas, and the Hindujas. Prominent industry names established in this region include Ashok Leyland, TVS Motor Company Ltd, Titan Industries Limited, Tata Electronics, Bata India, Bimetal Bearings, Hindustan Unilever, Carborundum Universal, Hindustan Motors, Caterpillar, Reckitt & Coleman, Shardlow India, Sundaram Fasteners, Taneja Aerospace, Wendt India, Kansi Nerolac, Terex, and others.
The recognition for the development of Hosur as a leading industrial centre within the nation should be credited to SIPCOT and SIDCO. These organisations have markedly contributed to the advancement of industrial stakeholders and the general public through the provision of vital infrastructural support and diverse services. Due to their persistent endeavours, Hosur has transformed into a contemporary urban centre equipped with numerous essential amenities.
HIA has been addressing several issues facing the industries in the region, playing two major roles:
To promote the interests of industries by improving the infrastructure facilities in industrial areas through long-term activities.
As a social commitment of HIA, undertaking social projects to provide long-term benefits to the general public in Hosur.
Although HIA was established in 1981, it has contributed significantly to the overall development of the township:
Hosur Industries Association (HIA), to augment the Police force, to encourage the citizens of Hosur to contribute to Road Safety and the betterment of Hosur, launched the “Traffic Wardens Scheme” in association with the Police Department in the year 2009 as part of the CSR initiative.
Under the scheme, volunteers from the industrial units in and around Hosur are enrolled after verification by the police department. The Traffic Police team trains the wardens on the rules and regulations governing the Traffic Warden Scheme. The entire expenditure towards uniforms and other accessories, such as Identity Card, Reflecting jackets, Raincoats, Baton flashlights, T-shirts, etc., is sponsored by member companies of HIA.
The Main duties of the traffic wardens are assisting Traffic constables in controlling traffic in the main junction points during peak hours. Every Traffic warden has to do 16 hours of duty in a month apart from their regular work in the industry and household chores. To be a traffic warden, one has to be self-motivated with a sense of social responsibility, which drives them to contribute their best for the welfare of the town in which they live. This requires selfless dedication and commitment to perform the duty on the road amidst the different temperaments of public onrushing vehicles.
Enforcing the traffic rules and ensuring the safety of the Hosur citizens on the road are the major objectives of the traffic wardens scheme. Several young boys joined, dedicating their time and being well-recognized by society. The family members of traffic wardens are very happy and supportive of this movement.
During critical days such as local festival days, political meetings & rallies, Vinayagar Chaturthi & its processions days, Govt. dignitaries & election duty at the district level, etc., all traffic wardens are fully involved in the bandobast duty along with the police force. The Superintendent & Deputy Superintendent of Police, Krishnagiri, commend their committed service, and Traffic Wardens are designated as Special Task Force.
HIA, along with Traffic wardens, thank the SP & DSP of the Police Department for their able guidance and support in making this scheme run successfully in Hosur town for the last ten years. Round 39 wardens are serving for a decade and deserve appreciation for their enthusiasm and commitment.
It’s worth mentioning the participation of Traffic wardens in the District Level Republic Day Parade in the presence of the District collector, along with the other contingents. Every year, the performance in the Parade is appreciated and honoured. In the Republic Day parade of 2023, the Road Safety students were also included.
The Hosur Police Department entrusted the work of monitoring the 80-plus CC TV cameras installed in various parts of the town to Traffic wardens. This demonstrates their meticulousness in watching the movement of traffic and guiding the constables & wardens at that site to regulate and streamline the traffic to ensure smooth flow.
Periodically, the Traffic Committee Chairman, Mr. Arvind M Ahi of Hosur Industries Association, convenes the meetings of Traffic wardens with the Senior Police officials to interact and voice their suggestions for improving road safety and to address their concerns, if any.
Most importantly, the main purpose of Traffic wardens is to create awareness of Road Safety among the public, employees, and students. Traffic wardens, along with Police officials, conduct Road Safety Programs in schools, colleges, industrial units, residential associations, etc. Traffic wardens currently take part in many helmet rallies to create awareness of & the importance of helmet usage among the public. The traffic wardens’ scheme is a movement & continuous program aiming to ensure accident-free safety on the road with the commitment & participation of industries.
